Half Price Books Haul

26 May 2012

This picture actually has nothing to do with the bookshop or haul.  I just liked the way the light was hitting my carpet this morning.

This weekend Half Price Books is having a nationwide sale in honor of Memorial Day.  Everything in the store is 20% off.  Which meant that my friend Emily and I were booking (oh yes, booking) it over to our local Indianapolis branch at 11am to put a gash in our summer budgets.

I had been eyeing this Salinger boxset for weeks. On Amazon it goes for around $60 and Half Price had it for $10+ under that. Tack on the promised 20% discount, really I didn't stand a chance.

I am a sucker for hardcover classics. Actually any hardcover book. I'm a binding snob. I steer away from paperback as much as possible. Unless the cover design is overwhelmingly compelling, I'm likely to wait until I can locate a hardback edition.

I'm looking at my bookshelf in my room right now, and yep, I have a paperback copy of Catcher, but I'm pretty sure it's my cousin's. Who lent it to me when I was fifteen. Guess I can finally get it back to him now that I have my own. Getting Franny and Zooey in hardback has been on my to-do list for a while so I'm super excited for it. Please scroll up and look at that boxset again. I'm just going to lust silently over here for a second.

I really only planned to perform my Salinger splurge, but then I made the mistake of combing through the DVD section.  I have a running list on my computer of films I want to own.  Because I'm a film student and I feel like my DVD collection is a sorry sight.  Which it is.  I don't have to possess all the lauded movies, but I at least would like to have some of my favorites on hand.  Really I could probably get by with just Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...

But anyway.  Building that personal film library.  At first I found American Beauty for $6.  Which I saw for the first time this year – watched it with my friend Julia during our trip to Sundance.  And then again for my postmodern film class.  In a movie theatre.  On 35mm.  God, that was a fantastic screening.  Looking in the clearance section later, I found another copy of it for $2!  Bazinga.

Set out looking for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and standing in the check out queue, I found (500) Days of Summer and Big Fish, the latter being arguably my second favorite movie of all time.

Considering the amount of beauty I walked off with, I'm feeling pretty okay with this.

This. I was so iffy about putting this in. But that's why you come here, isn't it? For a glimpse at these stupid little ploys I pull. Basically, there's this really attractive guy that works at this bookshop. And he was there again today. And I only got as far as writing down my number. Giving it to him, well, that's easier said than done. It's cool. He probably has a girlfriend. And I have my books. And Big Fish.

  3. I'm quite jealous of the Salinger boxset, it is absolutely stunning! I'm more of a paperback girl myself, but I do like to have hardcover copies of special books. Nice DVD finds, too.

P.S.: rooting for you to give your number to the bookshop guy next time.
